Introducing A Very ’70s Oris Collaboration With Collective Horology

The brand jumps 10 years ahead with the new Divers “Seventy-Five” with the Caliber 400.

What We Know

Collective Horology is on a tear right now, coming off the release of the Minerva monopusher chronograph with Montblanc. Today we have another new throwback, this time to the 1970s, with Oris.

The framework is the same 40mm by 12.8mm stainless steel case as the other Oris Divers Sixty-Five watches (or at least the ones with the Caliber 400 movement). This time, the watch fast-forwards to 1975 with bronze accents and a colorway straight out of the loudest 1970s kitchen you could ever imagine. The watch features a bronze unidirectional dive bezel, bronze center links on the bracelet, and bronze hands with yellow lume that match the yellow luminous indices on the dial. The dial is a mix of orange, that yellow lume, and a reddish-orange that seems viscerally ’70s, even if I never lived through the decade myself.

As mentioned, the watch is powered by the Caliber 400 in-house movement so it comes with 120 hours of power reserve. The case, with its display caseback, has 100m of water resistance – enough for most usage. The watch will run $4,500, with a price that, in part, reflects the in-house movement. The real bummer is that this isn’t going to be a continuous production piece and there are only 250 examples being made.

What We Think

I can’t resist. I have to say it. This thing is groovy!!

The team at Collective Horology has capitalized on a great throwback to the early Divers Sixty-Five with its stylized lumed numerals (which itself was a throwback to a vintage Oris). But by punching it up with the bronze unidirectional bezel, very ’70s colorway, and bronze and steel bracelet, this is probably my favorite Oris release of the year.

At some point I assumed that Oris would discontinue its old non-in-house movements and move the Divers Sixty-Five lineup completely to the Cal. 400 movements. Instead, it has maintained two different price points, which has kept the brand accessible. But I think Collective Horology made the right choice to go slightly upscale and use a movement that gives 120 hours of power reserve. Sure, with 100m of water resistance, it’s not the most dive-ready watch to have “Diver” in the name, but as a throw-back casual skin-diver style watch, it’s certainly an incredibly fun-looking option.

As Gabe Reilly at Collective Horology pointed out, where other brands might have gone with gold capping to get that warm hue on the bracelet or bezel, Oris has made bronze a big part of its lineup. It will take on some patina and age, but the fact that the entire case isn’t made out of bronze makes me think it’ll look really cool, taking on a feeling like the patina on a vintage gold or even gold-plated watch, with the benefit of not needing 50 years to pick that patina up.

From Collective Horology:

Divers “Seventy-Five”

We looked to 1970s California graphic design to draw out the elements we love most about the Divers Sixty-Five – bringing back the Arabic dial in a fitting ‘70s color palette, leaning into Oris’ unique bronze and steel bicolor format, and backing it all with the in-house Calibre 400. In fact, it’s not a Divers Sixty-Five; it’s the Divers “Seventy-Five.”
