The degraded brown dial of the Ianos Avyssos IA01 was designed with the purpose of referencing the colour of the Antikythera mechanism as well as the natural sponge colourations.
The small seconds hand has been replaced with a meaningful luminous rotating propeller in a cage structure replicating the main gear of the Antikythera mechanism, the hour markers are shaped like the kampanelopetra stone used by the “naked” sponge divers to pull them to the seabed in search of sponges and the rough texture of the dial only serves to accent the rugged nature of the sponge diver profession and the ancient inspiration of the watch.
Each component and design element has been re-thought and re-designed to serve a specific purpose and function. The bold curved case design offers unparalleled comfort and a slim profile while the case back features a deep strap channel allowing a one piece strap or NATO strap to pass through it, sitting flush with the case, thus affording maximum comfort with minimum height.
Each Ianos Avyssos IA01 is delivered with a brown Italian leather strap cured coating ensuring water usability and great aging as well as a brown Bonetto Cinturini rubber NATO strap.
In Greek, Avyssos (Abyss) is means the deepest and darkest parts of the sea as well as the soul. Dark, frightening, mysterious but also inviting, endless and alive.
To us, Avyssos means the depth which divers have been drawn to for generations, heeding the call of their most basic instincts of discovery and exploration, constantly pushing the limits of human ability and touching the impossible.
The Avyssos is a rethought and redesigned tool watch, made to be worn and beaten relentlessly, all in a timeless, elegant, utilitarian package while combining our two major inspirations on its unique dial. The Antikythera Mechanism and the legendary kampanelopetra technique of Greek sponge divers.
THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM
Taking inspiration from classic era diver watches, we re-thought the true purpose of the diver watch and focused on the most important information needed to a diver during a dive – that the watch is working.
In order to provide such information in a clear and concise way, we replaced the inefficient and often illegible seconds hands with an Antikythera Mechanism-inspired working indicator, replicating the shape of the main gear of the more than 2000 year old mechanism.
In this way, a a very complicated ancient mechanism once used to count Olympiads, eclipses and star movements, is reduced to its most basic function of counting seconds; information clearly available to the diver with a single glance.
THE KAMPANELOPETRA STONE
Paying homage to the sponge divers who found the Antikythera wreck and their ancient heritage, we have incorporated the iconic diving stone design into the dial as hour markers, as a symbol of the Symian divers’ unbreakable spirit in the face of daily danger and adversity.
Furthermore, in order to accentuate this ancient diving technique and the age of the Antikythera mechanism, inspiration we have given the dial a sandpaper texture to give the watch a more used and vintage feel in line with classic vintage divers, the numbers and minute indicators are cut-out, resulting in a beautifully designed and constructed sandwich dial.
