At the crossroads of vintage and versatile sits Seiko’s 6139-6012. With styling as timeless in design now as it was making history as one of the worlds first automatic chronographs, it’s ready for every occasion and built to deliver on performance. This example from October of ‘71 is an absolute stunner. The dial is a rich black with a brilliant sunburst beneath a glossy lacquer finish. It’s trimmed in a blocked silver minute track and sports the “70 Resist” designation given to early variants. The hour and minute hands are polished batons that are easily legible at a glance, and the fiery Red/orange chronograph hands pop in contrast. The angular chapter is a slick metallic black, and with its silver tachymetric scale, adds the right amount of sport to an otherwise casual layout. The case is textbook Seiko with great contours, a wide flat bezel, and integrated lugs. The 6139B driving the hands is keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and the original corners and finishes are still factory sharp. It comes attached to an Uncle Seiko Stainless Steel Bracelet but also includes the original triple-hinged “chiclet” style bracelet for a seamless finish that looks great on the wrist. An eye catching classic with pounds of vintage appeal, it’s sure to earn a regular spot among any rotation.
