Review from A Blog to Watch:

For 2014, Panerai quietly released a trio of watches with a sort of aged “vintage look” and lefty-style crown orientation. The Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio PAM569 (PAM00569) watch was among them, and it is a hell of a watch for Panerai lovers. In essence, the PAM569 is a mash-up of other Panerai design elements we’ve seen in the past, but this particular arrangement is pretty appealing. So let’s take a look at this new Luminor Submersible model.

The Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio is one of those unique Panerai watches that doesn’t immediately look like a Panerai. Even though all Panerai watches essentially started as dive watches, the Luminor Submersible is the the most “diver” of them all, at least in a contemporary sense. Why? Well one need only look at the dial design, 300 meters of water resistance, and of course the rotating diver’s bezel. Only Luminor Submersible Panerai watches have those.

So as a dive watch fan, I am drawn to watches like the PAM569 given its underwater looks and clean, legible dial. To better understand the PAM569, it is important to look at watches such as the Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Titanio PAM305 and the original Luminor Submersible PAM025. The PAM569 borrows the dial texture from the latter, and the overall design of the former. What makes the PAM569 different than the PAM305 is the left-handed orientation of the crown as well as the coloring of the luminant (and dial texture).

Of course, along with a crown position juxtaposition on the case, the movement inside of the watch must be flipped as well. That means rather than have the subsidiary seconds dial on the left and the date on the right, the Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio has the subsidiary seconds dial on the right and the date window on the left.

It seems like a minor thing, but it really switches up the dial personality a lot. The aged color of the lume is also attractive and helps give the Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio PAM569 a more mellow personality compared to the more traditional black dial with green lume of most other Panerai watches.

One of the best things about having a left-handed orientation of the crown on a Panerai watch is that it often makes wearing them much more comfortable. At 47mm wide the Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio is a large watch, only made more so by Panerai’s iconic crown guard. When placed on the right side of the case (as normal), this element can easily jut into your wrist. Assuming you are wearing the Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio on your left hand, the crown is not placed on the same side of the case as your wrist, so wearing it becomes a lot more comfortable.

Panerai is among the few companies that makes a timepiece which can be too large for your wrist but nevertheless still cool-looking. The PAM569 is perhaps too large for my wrist – as evidenced by the lugs that stick out further than where my wrist ends – but it still feels good and appears fashionable. Of course, this is aided by the fact that Panerai produced the PAM569 in titanium (same as the PAM305). The slightly darker color of the light-weight metal fits nicely with the vintage theme and aged-style leather strap.

The Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio dial design is simple but very effective. I wouldn’t call it “beautiful,” as some of Panerai’s more traditional designs are, but it is certainly very handsome and attractive. The round hour markers make for an interesting contrast against the more angular hands. Even though the hands don’t strictly need to be skeletonized (for any real reason unless you want to make absolutely sure you can read the seconds hand all the time), I don’t mind them. It probably adds to a balanced look for the dial, and the Luminor Submersible PAM569 watch is one of the few times I will accept skeletonized hands when they don’t offer added functionality.

I think that one of the reasons I am drawn to the Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio is because it is in the Submersible line and I like the fact that it really doesn’t look like most other Panerai watches. Nevertheless, the PAM569 does share that relaxed, yet utilitarian feel which many people like about the Panerai watch brand.

Inside the Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio PAM569 is Panerai’s in-house made P.9000 automatic movement. What I like about this movement is that in addition to it having 72 hours (three days) of power reserve, it still operates at a frequency of 28,800 bph (4Hz). Some more simple Panerai in-house made movements operate at 3Hz, and I prefer the 4Hz calibers given their propensity to be more accurate. The PAM569 does have a solid titanium caseback so you can’t view the movement – which makes sense, as it is a dive watch.

While the Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio is certainly cool, it is also a limited edition Panerai. Yes, that means it will be difficult to get in a few years, and Panerai will more than likely eventually produce a slightly different model that nevertheless makes you want both. Once again, what makes the PAM 569 different is the left-handed orientation of the crown, the aged brown calf leather strap, and the vintage look of the dial color. All in all, it is a pretty nice Panerai that hits a lot of sweet spots for me. The Panerai Luminor Submersible Left-Handed Titanio PAM569 watch is limited to 1000 pieces.
