From Hodinkee:
One of the last people I expected to meet in the middle of the Swiss Alps was Jérome Delafosse. I knew the French diver was an Oris ambassador. I knew also of his commitment to the brand, which far exceeds that of most ambassadors. But I wasn’t sure how Oris had convinced him to trade in his scuba gear for a headlamp and pair of snow boots, or why he had just trekked in the dark with a group of watch journalists, who were almost certainly going to discover the watchmaker’s latest altimeter watch. But there was something else too, and it made Delafosse’s presence make perfect sense.
The French diver has been friendly with Oris since picking out the Aquis Depth Gauge as “the only watch (he) would actually dive with,” during a photoshoot with GQ involving several dive watches. “It’s a good-looking and a functional diver, and the thing is we dive in countries that are very poor,” he tells me. “It would be ridiculous to wear a very luxurious timepiece there.”
But let’s get back to why Delafosse found himself in Zermatt, speaking in broken English about watches, and sharks. Oris has decided to support its ambassador by working with him on a conservation project in partnership with the non-profit organization Pelagios Kakunja, by raising raising funds to purchase MiniPAT satellite transmitters, which Delafosse and his team use to track the migration routes of the Scalloped Hammerhead. And they will be doing it through sales of the Oris Aquis Hammerhead Limited Edition.
The watch itself is based on the second-generation Aquis, a 45.5mm stainless steel diver launched back in 2011. This edition features a grey dial with a brilliant sunburst finish that veers towards light brown and even purple depending on how the light is reflected. The watch is punctuated by blue elements, including a blue seconds hands and a blue minutes scale around the outer edge of the dial. The hours markers are applied and filled with luminescent material too, a must for any real dive watch. Delafosse seemed very pleased with the Hammerhead when I spoke with him, as well as excited at the prospect of wearing it under water.
Oris guarantees the Hammerhead’s water-resistance up to 500 meters. The watch features a screw-down crown with crown protectors, and a unidirectional rotating bezel with a black ceramic insert. Inside, Oris has gone with the Oris caliber 752, a Sellita-based automatic movement with day and date indications at three o’clock.
