A Review From Hodinkee:

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of OMEGA’s Speedmaster here. As HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer has put it, “without it, there is no current version of me, there is no HODINKEE.” As the watch that went to the Moon, the Speedmaster will forever be a part of the collecting world, be it vintage, pre-owned, or modern – however those terms are identified today, or 50 years down the road. The great thing about the Speedmaster is the stripped-down, functional, utilitarian feel it exudes. While the story behind the model transcends watch collecting, the Speedmaster, as an object, speaks for itself.

So when someone asks the team at HODINKEE to recommend the ideal purchase for a first-time luxury watch buyer – a question we get even more often than you might think – the answer usually boils down to a few details. Someone looking to get their feet wet in the world of watch collecting is usually looking at a brand’s heritage, the name recognition of the watch, and something that represents more than just the passage of time. In our opinion, no watch is better suited for a first-time luxury watch acquisition – or a purchase at any time during a collecting career – than the first watch on the Moon, the OMEGA Speedmaster.

The Speedmaster was originally introduced in 1957 as a racing watch, and it wasn’t until 1969 – when the hand-wound chronograph accompanied the crew of Apollo 11 onto the surface of the Moon – that it received the legendary status it currently holds. Today, the Speedmaster collection is an expansive series of chronographs that includes models geared toward space exploration, racing, heritage, and modern technological advancement among much else. Historically, it’s one of the most iconic watch lines of all time, and continues to serve as one of the most signficant design families of watches ever developed.

When the Speedmaster Professional went to the Moon in 1969, a legend was born – the Moonwatch. OMEGA’s catalog has been built around that great, manually wound, lyre lugged cased chronograph ever since. Yet for the fans of the Moonwatch who found the classic Professional case a bit too large in diameter and the lauded manually wound caliber a bit too cumbersome, OMEGA introduced the Speedmaster Automatic, otherwise known as the “Reduced,” in 1988.

At its core, the Speedmaster Reduced was just that – a reduced sized Speedmaster. As such, the twisted lyre lugs stayed, as did the matte black dial with stark white accents, tri-register chronograph configuration, and external tachymeter bezel. Though now the watch would be executed at just 39mm, three millimeters smaller in diameter than traditional sizes at the time, and inside the watch an automatic mechanism – the OMEGA caliber 3220 based upon the ETA 2892-A2 – would provide power in comparison to a traditional manual-wound movement.

This particular model, the ref. 3510.50.00, was the original reference that debuted in 1988, and only had one direct successor in the 2010-launched ref. 3539.50.00. In most ways, the last-generation model is identical to the successor, but in smaller ways, the reference is distinguished, namely by its use of a Hesalite compared to sapphire crystal, as well as opting for the use of Arabic numerals in five minute increments at each of the hour positions. Additionally, as it was offered from 1988 to 2009, this Speedmaster Reduced spans the switch at OMEGA from tritium luminous material to LumiNova. Earlier examples will patina as though they are a vintage watch, while later models, after roughly 1997, the numerals, hour markers, and hands will remain stark white.

The Speedmaster Reduced has been well covered through the internet age of watch coverage and, although discontinued in 2010, it has certainly reached cult classic status. HODINKEE has long made the case for every watch enthusiast owning a Moonwatch, but for a new crew of watch lovers – particularly those either price conscious, looking for smaller styles, or both – the Speedmaster Reduced represents a distinguished aesthetic that is quickly becoming a go-to.
