R)efined (A)rticulated (W)atches or R.A.W. is a range of watches that explores a different set of design criteria to other moVas watches. Part Steampunk, modern yet classical, the R.A.W. series exposes watch movements in it’s undecorated form and builds a contemporary/ modern design around it. The initial concept for RAW II was to design a modern dress watch in a vintage pocket watch movement style. It started as an experiment to create a new watch aesthetic that appeared more honest than conventional methods of covering the movement with decorative dials. It was also a gamble in going against industry norm and accepted practice and leveraged heavily on our architectural background.

At 43mm it is the smallest watch moVas has released to date and also the first round shaped watch. The double domed raised glass is pushed to the edge of the case and as close to the top surface of the movement as possible to showcase more of the movement components from the side. Externally RAW II is made with a deep blasted titanium case with a polished bronze multi-hinged lug system which adapts to smaller wrist sizes. Polished stainless steel bolts are articulated and used as functional yet decorative elements. The dark grey titanium case match the dark frosted movement plate inside and the bronze lugs match the colour of the double balance cocks. This creates a unified and coherent design where the internal and external parts of the watch appear as one. The minimal dial work also match the movement colour and is intentionally skeletonised and abstract. The convex rehaut is machined as part of the watch case and match the movement plate thus dissolving the junction between movement and case. 12 polished steel balls form 5 seconds markers on the rehaut to give the watch more visual brilliance. Balls at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock are larger to give more visual interest.

The fascination and use of Chinese movements is continued and explored further in the RAW series as we search out more unique movements to bring to watch collectors. When we first saw a double exposed balance movement in a watch, we knew that we had to design a watch to show this mesmerizing function. Two balance wheels are traditionally used to reduce the timing errors due to temperature, magnetic fields and gravity as such variations are halved. Torque is also shared between both balance wheels thus reducing wear and variations from the unwinding of the barrel. 2 continually rotating gold balance wheels animates the dials and creates more visual interest than a regular blank printed dial. Coupled with the movable polished bronze lugs, the watch becomes even more dramatized. Movement plates are perlaged and a cote de geneve decoration is added to the signed rotor.

The RAW II illustrates how at moVas we continue to experiment with new watch designs and are unafraid to explore new genres of watch making so that we can bring more unique pieces to our customers’ watch collections.
