When Grand Seiko holds nothing back, the result is masterful.

The Backstory

For quite some time, Grand Seiko was regarded as the hidden gem of the watch industry. In fact, for many, it still remains somewhat of a mystery as watches with Seiko on the dial tend to be known for being around a more entry-level price point. Grand Seiko is different though, and the Spring Drive is even more so. Although the Grand Seiko name has been around since 1960, the world had to wait until 1997 to learn about a new mechanical/electronic marvel known as the Spring Drive.

So what actually is Spring Drive? Well, in a shorthand way, it’s a hybrid of both quartz and mechanical timekeeping that swaps out a traditional escapement in place of a tri-synchro regulator. At its core, this regulator uses a glide wheel and electro-magnets to regulate the wheel frictionlessly. The end result delivers a monthly accuracy tolerance that rivals most mechanical watches’ daily tolerance. Essentially, Grand Seiko offers the reliability and accuracy of quartz, just with the endless supply of power you find with mechanical timekeeping.

The modern-day Grand Seiko lineup is split into four clear and distinctive collections: Masterpiece, Elegance, Sport, and Heritage. The Sport range is the hardest wearing of the quartet, as its name indicates, serving as the brand’s sports-focused, tool watch range. While finely executed at the same level as the watches across the famed Japanese maker’s other design families, the timepieces within the Sport collection are distinguished foremost in their action-readiness, often featuring more utilitarian styles and utility-focused complications that work to serve the everyday, rather than the every once in a while.

Why We Love It

Perhaps the singular trait of Grand Seiko that attracts all to the brand is that they’re not one-dimensional in their operation. Movements, materials, and dials – Grand Seiko can do it all, and this SBGC223 has it all. Have you ever seen an exterior quite like this? Probably not, as Grand Seiko combined their High-Intensity titanium and a super strong Zirconia ceramic for the case and the bracelet. The movement is not only an extra precise Spring Drive but also a chronograph and a GMT, leaving all concerns of their watchmaking prowess at the door.

There’s no doubt that this isn’t a conventional Grand Seiko; it’s a celebration of their high-end capabilities with an absurd amount of captivation and unique proprietary hallmarks around every facet.
