The CombatSUB Sports Bronze GMT 42 Green Ref. GL0318 is made from marine grade bronze material, CuSn8. With wear, bronze creates a patina over time unique only to the owner. It measures at 42mm and 11.5mm thin for unsurpassed comfort on all wrist sizes. The short lugs to lugs length of 49mm together with the unique downward curving lugs meant the watch wraps around the wrist like a pair of gloves.
What is good looks without performance. The large screw-down crown is easy to grip and screws in and out without any sense of roughness in the screw threads contributed largely by the larger than usual screw tube.
Entirely hand finished and Made in Switzerland, the watch is satin brushed throughout to a very high standard, again synonymous with Glycine. Bronze patinates naturally as it oxidises neatly throughout, so that each watch will take on a unique finish over time. First for the CombatSUB to clad a GMT bezel, The 48 clicks bidirectional rotating bezel clicks positively in place with little play for added confidence. The bezel featured a beautiful two-tone black and green hues, with 24 hours makers labelled around. The CombatSUB is water resistant to a modest 200m.
The Combat comes with a sapphire crystal with three layers of antireflective coating on the underside for added clarity under different lighting conditions. Now, it adds on a functional magnefying cyclop to enhance the visibility of the date display underneath.
The design theme continues onto the dial and probably one of the highlights of the watch. The matte dial transitions from light green to a darker shade. It is then matched with matte rose gold applied index for continuity. The applied index are filled with a good amount of SuperLuminova for superb glow-in-the-dark. The Glycine signature hands are also rose old plated, and filled with matching SuperLuminova, while keeping the GMT hand visible in bright red.
Used to be powered by vintage movement Felsa Bidyanator automatic movements, the CombatSUB got its upgrade by having a Glycine GL293 movement which is essentially an ETA2893-2/SW330, operating at 28,800 bph (4 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 25/26 jewels with a power reserve of 42 hours. With this movement, the Airman follows a more current style time reading by driving the main hour hand around twice per day, having a slim GMT hand doing the 24-hour duty. All that can be seen through its stainless steel, screw-down case-back – a first also for the CombatSUB line.
The CombatSUB bronze comes with a 22mm Glycine signed brown calf leather strap and buckle.
Overall, the Glycine CombatSUB Sports Bronze GMT 42 Green Ref. GL0318 exhibits very great value given the history and built of the watch. We love the use of CuSn8 for the case and bezel. And not to mention the unique transitional dial with matching rose gold plated details in the dial. The contemporary size with unique curved lugs makes this watch ultra comfortable on many wrists. The unique Glycine looks, the GMT function, the sapphire makes this an exceptional bargain and hard to beat. The CombatSUB GMT definitely fits Glycine’s philosophy that Mr Eugène Meylan set out in 1914.
