Overview
The GMT hand is actually a dual time indicator (hour only, and “clicks” to the next hour position) and can be independently set. There are a total of six functions, or “complications”: (1) hour; (2) minutes; (3) seconds; (4) date; (5) 2nd time zone, and; (6) power reserve.
Specifications:
Even though the face is somewhat busy, the time, date, GMT time and power reserve are instantly legible– it is quite easy to see the silver hands and the white numerals (against the black dial), from almost any angle, where the rest of the markings are small enough at a distance not to be distracting. The hour and minutes hands are slightly folded silver steel sabers, with a slight peak crease in the center, which helps to attract reflected light at just about any angle, thereby making this a very legible watch at virtually any angle, in any light.
On the dial there is a central sphere, indented slightly lower and with a “guilloche” ring pattern-more depth and texture. The upper and lower “sub dials” (GMT at 12, and the Power Reserve at 6) also have a two tier make up with the outer rings raised, and inner rings indented below the surface. Both hands for the sub dials are colored, red for the black dial and blue for the white dial, and both have tritium tubes. The Power Reserve sweeps up to a maximum of 40 hours when fully wound.
GMT/Dual Time Indicator
One thing (of many!) I love about this watch is the simplicity of the GMT/dual time indicator-it is a single hour hand on a 24-hour sub dial (which is of course all you really need, since the minutes are going to be the same in any time zone). To set the red (or blue) indicator to the hour of your choice, you just use a toothpick or similar tool and touch a tiny recessed button on the side of the case at the 10:30 position. For each position, the hand moves forward one full hour
Movement
The Ball Calibre 9035 is an ETA 2892-based movement. It is a 2892 with the added complications of power reserve and second time zone but it is not a 2893. The 2892 is widely considered a more advanced and accurate movement than the 2824 which dates back to the 1950s and is far more basic in architecture.
Setting the Time(s)
Local time is set by pulling the crown out to its last place where the hacking seconds allows precision time-setting. As noted above, the GMT [second, or dual, time zone] hand is easy to set by pressing the recessed button at 10:30 with a toothpick or something similar and can be done without stopping the watch, or even pulling out the crown. Any time zone can be tracked using this hand when traveling and can be set independent of the “home” time.
Crystals
Sapphire crystals, front and back, with the front having internal AR-very sharp and clear as to be expected.
Limited Edition
The first Voyager was marketed and sold as a “Limited Edition” watch, with a planned production of 333 watches. However, according to USA Ball President, Jeff Hess, less than 100 were actually produced. Interestingly, none of the watches have the usual “Limited Edition” references such as the issue number, or simply the words Limited Edition marked anywhere on their cases. The Voyager GMT PR was so limited that it wasn’t even listed in the product catalogs of the time.
